Meet Lawrence...
Lawrence is an 18-year-old alternative musician from Essex who is giving a voice to the under-represented. Lawrence has struggled with identity issues in the heteronormative environment he's grown up in, and his latest single 'Girls and Boys' is his protest to conformity as he encourages people to love who they want to love. Influenced by protest artists like Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Public Enemy, Lawrence uses his music to speak out against injustices he sees and rebel against authority. Lawrence has been a breakout star since his cover of David Bowie's 'Starman' went viral on YouTube in 2018 and his fan base has been growing and growing ever since. Following a stream of successful singles, Lawrence's debut album 'PDA Glue' is launching Summer 2021, filled with upbeat indie tunes alongside more poetic, emotional tributes to Lawrence's influences and life experiences.
In the build up to Lawrence's new album coming out, NME met with Lawrence to find out more about the mysterious new boy on the scene.
A message to my fans:
Hi guys, Lawrence here. As you know, singing and songwriting is my passion, and my favourite thing is making music that people can identify with and really vibe to, and I think my newest single really shows that off. Finding music that speaks to you is such an important part of defining your identity and when I was growing up I had no one like me to look up to, so I became my own idol. I write and sing about the way I feel in the hopes that you guys can find a piece of yourself in my work, and hopefully enjoy the tune at the same time! I always love to know if any of my music
has been a soundtrack to something special in your life,
so it'd be groovy if you could tweet in some of the good
times you've had to my songs under the
#LifeWithLawrence. I'm forever grateful for all of your love
and support and, as always, be free and be you.
When I was growing up I had no one like me to look up to, so I became my own idol.
